The Intense Work That Goes Into Theatrical Production…
Jul 29th
I once volunteered to do some stage management work for a theatrical production near my home town. I did it, but it really took a lot out of me. So much, that I will NEVER do it again. Ok, it was NOT as bad as having halitosis. If you do, however, therabreath oral rinse could help.
They wanted me there every day plus weekends too.I was just volunteering and I had no clue what kind of time requirements were needed from me when I volunteered. You have to love theater to do this type of work
Being a stage hand is no fun either. You have to make things happen on cue, like a ‘knock on the door’. I remember one time, my queue was coming up and I was on the wrong side of the stage! I ran outside and around the back to get to the other side of the stage from the outside.I slipped on something hard and fell, scraping up my arms and when I got up I had a limp.
I made it to the other side and made the knock, but my work was wasted as someone else was there poised to do the knock for me when I showed up. I felt worthless! The constant drills, the constant work and I wasn’t even there on time for a simple knock!
Now, I remember when everyone wrote on the walls of the dressing area. Don’t worry, this was a tradition. All I wanted to write and all that I did write was, “Is it over yet”? I couldn’t help myself. I was starting to hate the whole scene.
Anyway, like I said before you have to be dedicated to this kind of work and if you are not that dedicated you would be better off not getting involved. You will end up with a bad attitude like mine.
Why didn’t I quit? Well, I try not to quit the things I start. But as miserable as I was, it would have been better for me and probably everyone else if I had gotten out of the way.
I remember when the director was screening and it was my job to police the actors that were auditioning and let them know when their turn was.I remember one older women telling me that she was a ‘diva’.
I guess in theater it is acceptable behavior for actors to be this way. But in my mind as an untrained theater person all I saw was an unjustifiably arrogant 60 year old in front of me.
You know that actors need to keep in shape. They could possibly benefit from Cho Yung Tea for slimming purposes. Diva’s need to have pearly white teeth, kardashian teeth whitening might be good for these purposes!
I guess the moral of the story is, if you are not REALLY into theater, it isn’t fair to the actors, the audience or your fellow theater people for you to be there. On the other hand, if you LOVE theater, this is your world and you should enjoy every minute of it!
