For any of you that watched the Tomorrow’s World programs as a kid, you probably would have thought by this time we’d have robotic housemaids and other gadgets doing everything for us. Unfortunately, technology hasn’t progressed quite as quickly as predicted and these days we’re impressed if we see a robot that can walk on its’ own without falling over.

So imagine being able to control a robots movements to such a degree that you could make it dance or fight whenever you like, imagine how impressed we’d be. Well not only is that possible, but it’s possible in your very own living room. Although you’ll have to pay the £450 for it, but hey, there’s always the birthday presents wanted list!

The new MechRC (radio controlled) robot is the most easy to program and easy to use piece of robotics you’re likely to see. With 100+ preinstalled motions and sounds you can have the little beast displaying his dance moves within an hour of taking him out of the box.

Actually programming movement into the bot is simple too. The Mech RC can be programmed using software that comes in the box; the software lets you drag the robot into the position you want, then program motion using a filmstrip type animation. You can then also add music and sound effects, which are played from the speaker located in the centre of the robots chest.

The MechRC comes already built when you buy it, which allows you to just get on with the job of programming it and having some fun. It also comes with an IR remote control should you want him to break into a spontaneous dance or fight routine.

For what are pretty much toys, these RC robots are admittedly expensive, but they are genuinely great fun! The movement of the robot is extremely natural and it’s capable of completing some impressive physical manouvers. Who knows, if it carries on like this, maybe one day I’ll get my robotic butler after all.
